Abstract
The complaints are real and recent: users say the updated Steak ’n Shake app traps them in login loops, loses rewards or gift-card access, fails receipt scans, and sometimes cannot take payment. But a solo builder cannot ship a true replacement for official ordering, rewards redemption, gift cards, kiosks, or store fulfillment without Steak ’n Shake’s cooperation, so the realistic opportunity is a small companion utility, not a serious competitor.

Background
Steak ’n Shake is the official free ordering and rewards app for pickup, delivery, saved payments, gift cards, Google Pay, receipt points, and a $2 reward earned every 20 points. Its lifetime rating is still 4.2★, and the install history provided shows more than 2.3M installs by 2026-10-03, but the recent review sample is dominated by complaints after a late-September update.
What it does
Browse the menu, customize meals, order pickup or delivery, save payments, use gift cards, and manage Steak ’n Shake Rewards.
What changed
Reviewers describe a new update that broke sign-in, guest checkout, rewards visibility, receipt scanning, saved history, and some menu options.
Why it is soft
Users are angry at reliability, not at the restaurant brand; that creates demand, but most value is locked inside official systems.
Strengths
This is not a weak brand with no pull. Several positive reviews still praise the food, prices, simple ordering flow, family ordering, gift-card redemption, and fast pickup. Some users explicitly say they love Steak ’n Shake while blaming the app or a third party, which means a new entrant would be fighting a brand habit it cannot replace.
Installed habit
The provided install series reaches 2,329,416 installs, so the official app has distribution and search trust a solo app starts without.
Brand loyalty
Negative reviewers often separate the app from the food, saying they still like the restaurant but cannot use ordering or rewards reliably.
Known working core
Before the update, reviewers describe the app as fast, easy, and useful for rewards; the product concept is validated.
Market gap
The gap is severe, but it is mostly a reliability and integration gap inside the official app. A competitor can help users track, plan, and document orders, but cannot actually redeem points or place official orders unless Steak ’n Shake exposes access.
Login loop and lost account access
The most common recent complaint is the update signing users out, accepting a code, then returning them to the home screen or treating the account as missing.
Rewards, receipts, and gift cards
Reviewers say they cannot scan receipts, manually enter codes, see old rewards, redeem coupons, or access gift-card balances loaded into the account.
Payment and duplicate orders
Users report Google Pay, PayPal, cards, guest checkout, and mixed gift-card payments failing, plus orders appearing twice after an error.
Menu and fulfillment edge cases
A smaller but concrete cluster mentions missing customization options, delivery-tip removal, bad location selection, and pickup timing that offers no advantage over the line.
This app was fine before but whatever update they did completely broke it. I have tried for multiple days to login on the app and it does not work. At first it popped up an error message saying try again later, now it just sends you to the home page anytime you try to sign in. The rewards system is completely broken so I can't order ahead or order delivery.
So this app is a piece of work. can't order ahead because it won't take any form of payment I tried. added a card, didn't save it. PayPal, G pay same thing. Just fails to process. luckily the food is good and my new location is a quick walk from the office. would be nice to order ahead and have it ready to save some time but whatever. happy to have then back in my area after they all disappeared posy pandemic.
The new update will not let me log into my account. I went to the physical store location to sign in with the kiosk. Even the kiosk will not sign me in. It said my phone number is not found. The new update literally erased my entire rewards account. And I had over $50 in gift cards that were loaded onto my account. Thanks Steak N Shake!
- Do not build a fake official checkout. The pain is ordering and payment, but a solo builder cannot safely process Steak ’n Shake orders without a sanctioned integration.
- Build a receipt and rewards evidence vault instead. Users losing receipt scans, points, and gift-card visibility need a local record, screenshots, exports, and support-ready summaries.
- Add an order-planning checklist, not fulfillment. Let users save favorite customizations, missing cheese/crispy-onion notes, and pickup reminders they can use at the kiosk or counter.
Build complexity
Estimated, not derived: one part-time solo developer, no funding, no team, and no paid acquisition. This assumes a companion app that avoids official checkout, rewards redemption, gift-card spend, and store fulfillment, because those require access a solo builder does not have.
| Workstream | Weeks |
|---|---|
| Android app shell, onboarding, local account | 1.5 |
| Order planner, favorites, customization notes | 2.0 |
| Receipt capture, manual entry, reward ledger | 2.0 |
| Gift-card and support-evidence vault | 1.5 |
| Export, reminders, basic backup | 1.0 |
| QA, Play listing, billing, disclaimers | 2.0 |
| Total | 10.0 |
Expected revenue
Estimated, not derived: the official app is free, and users want working rewards more than another paid utility. Assume a free companion with an optional $1.99/month Pro tier for receipt OCR, backup, exports, and family order templates. With no paid acquisition and a single-chain audience, month-12 revenue is modest.
| Month 12 funnel | Users | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Installs | 2,000 | Organic search, Reddit/local posts, review-driven discovery |
| Activated | 800 | 40% add a receipt, reward, or favorite order |
| Retained | 300 | 15% still using it after the immediate app outage pain fades |
| Paid | 150 | $1.99/month optional Pro |
| Revenue | $300 | Rounded MRR before store fees and taxes |
Biggest challenges
The hard part is not screens or receipt storage; it is that the valuable actions happen inside Steak ’n Shake’s official account, payment, kiosk, delivery, and rewards systems. A solo builder also has to avoid implying official affiliation while still being discoverable to angry Steak ’n Shake users.
No official integration
You cannot redeem rewards, spend gift cards, fix login, place orders, or prevent duplicate official orders from outside their system.
Trademark and listing risk
An unofficial app using the restaurant name too aggressively could confuse users or trigger Play Store and brand complaints.
Support burden
Users may expect you to recover missing points or gift cards, even though you can only help them document and escalate the issue.
AI angle
There is a small but genuine AI angle: receipt OCR and support-summary generation make the companion app more useful and faster to build than manual receipt entry alone. AI does not solve the core problem, because it cannot restore official rewards, log users into Steak ’n Shake, or process orders.
Useful AI
Parse receipt photos into date, store, total, items, and points evidence; summarize failed scans and missing balances for a support email.
Not useful AI
Do not pitch AI ordering, reward recovery, or payment repair unless the official backend exposes a real integration.
Conclusion
Skip it. The review gap is obvious, but the commercial value sits behind official Steak ’n Shake rails a solo builder cannot access. A narrow companion app could earn a little, but it is not a true competitor and will disappoint users if marketed that way.
