Abstract

Hily’s recent angry reviews are unusually clear: users do not just dislike paying, they feel premium, unblurs, ads, bots, distance filters and locked chats make the app hostile to actual dating. The gap is real, but a solo builder is entering a trust-and-liquidity marketplace where the product is only useful if enough real local people show up.

Background

Hily Dating app: Meet & Date is a free dating app with a 4.3β˜… lifetime rating and 20,974,758 installs as of 2026-08-05. Its listing promises matching, chatting, photo verification, privacy controls, Consent Guard, icebreakers and Premium perks like seeing likes, boosts, undo, filters and incognito mode.

What it does

Profiles, swiping, likes, chat, verification, filters, boosts, unblurs and premium discovery features for local and international dating.

What changed

Recent reviewers describe the app as increasingly paywalled, ad-heavy and dependent on paid unblurs even after subscribing.

Why it is soft

Users are asking for the simplest version of dating: real nearby people, transparent access to mutual interest, and chat that works without stacked charges.

Strengths

This is not a dead product. Hily has a large installed base, a polished interface, a known brand, and some reviewers still report dates, responsive support, good messaging, roulette, voice and video messages. A competitor would not be replacing a broken utility app; it would be trying to win trust and local liquidity from a scaled marketplace.

Distribution

20,974,758 installs is the asset a solo entrant cannot copy quickly.

Product surface

The core dating feature set is broad: profiles, discovery, chat, safety tools, verification and paid boosts.

Some retained love

A few reviewers say they met people or previously got dates, so the backlash is not universal.

Market gap

The complaints cluster around trust, not novelty. The most common pain is the double-paywall feeling: subscription does not feel like real access, because users still run into unblurs, locked chats, popular-profile gates and paid extras.

Premium still feels locked

Many reviewers say paying does not reveal enough likes, does not make chat feel open, or still requires paid unblurs.

Bots, fake profiles, no replies

A recurring second complaint is that likes appear attractive but never respond, feel automated, or seem to come from fake and inactive accounts.

Ads interrupt dating

Reviewers object to frequent video ads, forced ad interaction, ads between swipes, and ads that make the app feel like a mobile game.

Discovery feels unreliable

Distance filters, repeated profiles, hidden popular users, moderation bans and verification failures make users doubt the system.

I am a premium plus member, to see who visits my profile. still pay for what they call unblur & is $7.99 😳 25 unblurrs is an additional $44.99- do you realize people are paying a premium account price and still have to pay just to use the app. RESPONSE- pricing is public, the only thing that is proprietary about pricing is the details of the gimmick in which the customer purchases. you're sells are based on small print and misleading assumptions. great short term plan, bad for long term growth.

They just made it so there are Ads every 30 sec. It's unusable. Edit:(You can't match with someone if Holy is blocking you from seeing there profile unless you pay them money). They hide people that like your profile and force you to pay to unblur them to match with them. Gives you a daily roulette spin but doesn't let you use any of your rewards without paying to use them. Can't use rollbacks, major crushes, unblur, or boosts without paying, and you have to pay to message someone.

Infested with bots and fake accounts. You can report them all the live long day and they never go away. Every time I used a "boost" I would get numerous likes from gorgeous women. Whenever I would like them back and open a conversation, they never respond. Ever. Yet they liked me? Also the unblur system is highly predatory. Even at the highest sub tier you only get 2 a day and they never roll over. Don't believe the ads. This app is all hype, no substance.

  1. Make mutual matches and chat free. The wedge is not β€œcheaper unblurs”; it is refusing to blur reciprocal interest in the first place.
  2. Default to verified, recently active profiles. Inactive accounts, bots and no-reply likes are what turn monetization from expensive into suspicious.
  3. Launch one local niche, not a global app. A solo builder cannot solve nationwide dating liquidity; start with one city, community or identity where trust can compound.

Build complexity

Estimated, not derived: one developer, part-time, no funding, no team and no paid acquisition. A minimal competitor is still a UGC marketplace with chat, safety, moderation, payments and local density, so the honest v1 is slow for a solo builder.

Expected revenue

Estimated, not derived: because the gap is distrust of stacked fees, assume free mutual chat and a transparent optional supporter plan at $6.99/month for visibility controls, profile notes and extra filters. With no paid acquisition, month-12 revenue is likely small.

Biggest challenges

The hard part is not copying swipes. It is getting enough real nearby people at the same time, moderating romantic and sexual UGC safely, surviving app-store scrutiny, and proving you are not another paywall trap while starting with zero reviews.

Cold-start liquidity

A dating app with honest rules still feels empty until a local pool forms.

Trust and safety workload

Reports, harassment, fake profiles, scams and identity disputes create support load a solo builder cannot ignore.

Store and policy risk

Dating, user images, subscriptions and moderation all raise review and compliance stakes.

AI angle

There is a real AI angle, but only on safety and operations. AI can triage scammy bios, duplicate photos, explicit images and harassment reports faster than a solo builder can manually review them. It should not be used to fake likes, fake replies or inflate engagement, because that is exactly the trust wound users are reacting to.

Useful AI

Moderation queues, suspicious-profile flags, image checks, safer icebreaker suggestions and report summaries.

Do not use AI for

Synthetic matches, bot conversations, fake activity, or manipulative prompts to buy boosts.

Conclusion

Skip it. The market gap is obvious, but the product category is brutal for a part-time solo builder: you need real users, moderation, trust, safety and local density before the app has value. Build only if you already control a local community that can seed the first market.
