Abstract

The user pain is loud and consistent: paid access before real evaluation, hard cancellation, thin local pools, and scam/fake-profile anxiety. But a dating app is a two-sided marketplace, not just a feature clone, so this is only worth attempting with a narrow local or community wedge.

Background

eharmony dating & real love is a free-to-download relationship app with a 3.1β˜… lifetime rating and 10,207,071 installs as of 2026-08-05. Its positioning is compatibility-first dating for serious relationships, with a quiz, detailed profiles, match scores, and Premium messaging.

What it does

Long-form onboarding, compatibility scoring, profile prompts, likes, matches, and Premium messaging for people seeking serious relationships.

What changed

Recent reviewers describe the free product as nearly unusable, with photos, messages, distance controls, and meaningful evaluation pushed behind Premium.

Why it is soft

The incumbent has brand trust, but many current users now distrust the contract, cancellation flow, refunds, customer support, and visible size of the dating pool.

Strengths

This is not a weak product category. Even angry reviewers sometimes praise the questionnaire, serious-relationship intent, profile depth, cleaner interface, and better preference matching than swipe-first apps. eharmony also starts with a large installed base and a long-running brand reputation a solo builder cannot copy.

Compatibility habit

Several positive or mixed reviews say the quiz and match scoring feel more thoughtful than casual dating apps.

Serious positioning

The app still attracts people who want long-term relationships, not just endless swiping.

Brand memory

Some reviewers joined because they remembered the brand, commercials, reputation, or prior success stories.

Market gap

The gap is not β€œbuild another dating app.” It is narrower: let serious daters see whether a real local pool exists, communicate enough to validate value, and cancel cleanly without feeling trapped.

Contracts and cancellation

The most common complaint is commercial: long commitments, confusing renewal terms, refund refusals, email-only cancellation, continuing charges, and collections threats.

Paywall before proof

Reviewers object to blurred photos, locked messaging, locked distance controls, and spending a long time building a profile before learning that useful access requires Premium.

Thin or inactive pools

Many reviewers say they ran out of nearby people quickly, saw inactive profiles, or discovered too late that their local area had few viable matches.

Trust and safety

A recurring cluster mentions scammers, phishing, fake profiles, robotic profiles, poor reporting outcomes, blocked accounts, and canned support responses.

Actual garbage: while other apps actually let you chat, all you can do is do these stupid "icebreakers" and send a smile once a day. You can't see photos of people unless you pay for premium, same goes for messaging. I've also seen several reviews saying you can't read messages unless you have premium, so even if one has it, the other has to get it too. If you attempt to add any handles, they review it to prevent you from contacting matches from outside the app. Make messaging free.

I met my late wife on the app. it is now a shell of what it used to be. Waste of money and I see the same accounts of people that were there 3+ years ago. Highly doubt most of the profiles are real and definitely see some potential AI stuff there. Very few people are actually in it as I already ran out of matches in less than a week. eH used to include a lot of things in their subscription, now they charge a lot more and give less, which explains the lack of actual people.

  1. Show the local pool before payment. Let users see approximate nearby active-member volume, unblurred first photos, and last-active ranges before any subscription ask.
  2. Make mutual-match messaging usable for free. Charge for boosts, richer filters, read receipts, or more daily intros, not the basic proof that the app can produce a real conversation.
  3. Cancel in-app, instantly. A monthly plan with a clear cancel button is the cleanest differentiator against the strongest review anger.

Build complexity

Estimated, not derived: one developer, part-time, no funding, no team, and no paid acquisition. A basic dating app is shippable, but trust, safety, payments, and enough UX polish to look credible make this a long solo build.

Expected revenue

Estimated, not derived: assume a $9.99/month optional Premium plan, cancelable in-app, with free local browsing and free replies after a mutual match. With no paid acquisition, month-12 revenue depends on slow organic discovery and a small local wedge, not mass-market dating scale.

Biggest challenges

The hard part is not the app shell; it is earning enough trust and density for people to risk their romantic life on a new, unknown dating network. A solo builder also has to handle moderation, scam reports, refunds, privacy expectations, and lonely users’ support requests without a team.

Two-sided cold start

Without paid acquisition, a broad national launch will look empty. The only plausible wedge is one city, faith group, age band, campus, profession, or community.

Trust and safety load

Dating apps attract scammers and harassment quickly; manual review, blocking, reporting, and appeals become operational work, not just code.

Store credibility

New dating apps with few reviews look risky. You need visible transparency, founder support, and early testimonials before strangers will upload photos.

AI angle

There is a modest AI angle, but it is not magic. AI can cheaply triage profile text, photos, scam signals, duplicate-looking bios, and support drafts so a solo builder is not doing every first-pass moderation task by hand. It does not solve the marketplace cold start.

Useful AI

Profile-quality coaching, scam-risk flags, moderation summaries, and support-response drafts can reduce manual workload.

Not a moat

eharmony can also use AI, and reviewers already worry about robotic or AI-like profiles, so overusing it would hurt trust.

Conclusion

Skip it. The market gap is real, but a generic eharmony competitor is too hard for a part-time solo builder without distribution. Build only if you can start with a focused community where local density is already reachable.
