DeepSeek - AI Assistant — FAQ

Is DeepSeek legit?

Yes — this is the official DeepSeek AI assistant app, and reviews reflect genuine daily use by a large number of people for coding, conversation, and general questions, many of whom compare it favorably to other assistants. The complaints in reviews are about specific behavior, not about the app being fake or untrustworthy.

My go-to AI chatbot for my daily work. It's simple to use yet I can use it for a long time without limits. Doesn't have extra redundant features which distract away from the functioning of the app. I also use their API for programming purposes, and it's one of the best to use if you use a coding harness like OpenCode or Reasonix.

Why does DeepSeek reply in Chinese even when I write in English?

This is by far the most common complaint in recent reviews — many users say the app switches to Chinese mid-conversation or in its 'thinking' output even with the language set to English, and that repeatedly asking it to respond in English doesn't reliably fix it. It's reported across users typing in several different languages, not just English, and appears to be an ongoing, unresolved bug rather than a one-off glitch.

"I have used your app and web version for weeks. Despite setting everything to English, I consistently get Chinese "thinking" and Chinese answers. I cannot read Chinese so this is a huge bug, even when using "Think in English" and "Answer in English" constantly. Your support team has not fixed this. Your AI assistant in chat denied the problem and made excuses. I am uninstalling and moving to a competitor. You lost a user due to broken language settings and poor support."

Why does DeepSeek limit how many times I can edit or regenerate a reply?

Several reviewers are frustrated by a cap — around six edits and regenerations per message — that they say used to be unlimited, making it harder to refine an answer or continue a long conversation without starting over. This is described as a recent change rather than how the app has always worked.

Oh my days get rid of the edit and regeneration limit. it is driving me up the wall. get rid of it or lengthen it like 10 times. I dont care just why is it 6 regenerations? get your act together

Does DeepSeek avoid or censor certain topics?

A handful of reviewers report the app declining to give a straight answer on politically sensitive topics tied to China, and more generally note it apologizes and hedges rather than directly answering some questions. This isn't the dominant complaint in reviews — most focus on the language-switching and edit-limit issues above — but it comes up specifically around sensitive historical and political subjects.

Seems to have some issues when asked about Tiananmen Square and how nothing happened there on the 4th of June 1989.
