Is Babbel - Learn Languages free or do you have to pay?

You should not install Babbel expecting a full free language course. The Play Store description says a subscription is needed to use Babbel fully, and reviewers repeatedly say the free experience ends almost immediately after the opening lesson. Several reviewers describe the “free” listing as misleading because pricing appears only after account setup or onboarding.

The positive side is that some reviewers like the teaching style enough to pay. But if you are looking for a genuinely free app, the recent review pattern is a clear warning: Babbel is mainly a paid product with a short trial-like preview.

Was looking for a free, easy to stick with language-learning app. I was welcomed with entertaining lessons and true feedback, until I wanted to do a second lesson. I waited a day to see if it was a daily thing but no. You literally get one lesson per level on the free version. And payment is advertised as optional. I would be less disappointed had I been told that the free version was pretty much a trial.

I made the assumption that this would let me learn one free lesson a day, and I would have to pay the $100 to get more than that. I was incorrect. It gives you exactly one free lesson. This is an app that lets you download it for free and gives you exactly one taste of their (admittedly excellent) teaching strategy, then demands $100+ for even one more lesson.

The app is not free as advertised just because you can access the first lesson for free...

Is Babbel - Learn Languages hard to cancel or manage subscriptions?

Recent reviewers raise serious concerns about subscription management. The Play Store description says subscriptions renew unless auto-renew is turned off before the current payment period ends, but several reviewers say they could not find how to cancel, were charged unexpectedly, or had trouble stopping payment.

Because the complaints involve billing and cancellation, a cautious user should check where the subscription is purchased and how cancellation works before starting a trial or paid plan.

Signed up for the trial version. They do not provide an option to cancel, so they can charge you for an entire year subscription. Do not sign up. This app is not user friendly and it is a scam.

same as Duolingo. too expensive. not really learning. boring waste of money. promised 7 days free and a monthly plan, and it didn't honor that. took one lump sum payment and have yet to figure out on how to cancel.

Is Babbel - Learn Languages worth paying for compared with Duolingo?

Reviews are split. People who like Babbel often praise it for teaching grammar, structure, pronunciation, and context more directly than Duolingo. Several positive reviewers describe it as more serious, less gamified, and better for understanding why a language works.

The main objection is value for money. Some reviewers like the lessons but say the subscription is too expensive, too limited, or not engaging enough for the cost. Babbel may be a better fit if you want structured grammar explanations and are willing to pay, but it is a poor fit if you want a free, game-like learning app.

I'm liking Babbel a lot more than Duolingo (which kinda went off the rails and lost its way). Straightforward with minimal distracting gamification. There are actually meta educational components about the language - grammar rules, exceptions. I do wish it got into more details about pronunciation - especially with French as the rules (or lack thereof) make it complicated. Ideally it could even correct my pronunciation someday. The lifetime license is also a pretty decent deal.

I really like Babbel. It gives context and explains the grammar in a very clear manner. I am learning french. I also gave as a gift to my partner to learn Portuguese and am impressed how good it is with slang and vocabulary we in fact use in daily life. Nothing comparable to Duolingo - this app is on another level. it is not cheap indeed, but if you get an end of summer offer it is worth it , I think.
★★★★★Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-22 · 1 found this helpful
The app does teach structured lessons fundamentally from a personalized starting point but then doesnt quite explain the why. The free learning is pretty much non-existent and jumps to 3 month subscription minimal. Which the price is expensive for an app. To me it seems pretty high for the flat learning style. Theres nothing really competitive that drives you like contests, freebies to be won, or anything that puts a spin on the learning aspect. For that price I want the app to clutch me in.

Does Babbel - Learn Languages speech recognition work well?

Speech recognition is one of the most common quality complaints in recent reviews. Reviewers say speaking exercises can be buggy, affected by background noise, limited to pass/fail feedback, or unable to recognize correct pronunciation. Some still like the rest of the app, but describe the speaking portion as unreliable.

If speaking practice is your main reason for subscribing, the reviews suggest trying the speech exercises on your own device and in your normal environment before committing.

The speaking exercises are extremely buggy and mostly do not work. It is very frustrating. It's a shame because it is quite a decent app otherwise.
★★★☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-09 · 0 found this helpful
Solid, but some aspects are lacking- especially speaking functions and the library of words and phrases. Feedback on spoken tests is limited to pass/fail, input is heavily influenced by background noise, and seems to rely on some janky tonal pattern matching software. You can easily spoof a pass by mumbling consonants but closely imitating tone. The "learned" terms are affected by some recency bias thing, and completely fails to record certain words, especially verb forms. Lots of room for......
★★★★☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-11 · 0 found this helpful
Could not get speech recognition working in this app, so speaking practices were unusable. Tech support unhelpful. Also, you can download unit files but the app does nor work completely offline (and eg. sync progress when online again).

What languages does Babbel - Learn Languages include, and what languages are missing?

The Play Store listing says Babbel teaches Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Turkish, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Dutch, Indonesian, and English. Reviews confirm that users can learn languages such as Spanish, Swedish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and Polish, but also complain that several desired languages are not available.

Is Babbel - Learn Languages good for beginners, intermediate, or advanced learners?

Babbel appears strongest for learners who want structured basics and grammar explanations. Positive reviewers say it helps them grasp the basics, gives clear grammar context, and supports language-school-style learning.

It may be weaker for advanced learners or for courses with less depth. Some reviewers say the content stops too early, becomes less useful at higher levels, or jumps around before beginners have enough explanation. The best answer depends heavily on the language course you choose.

if you are past intermediate level there is nothing here for you edit: What is this response supposed to achieve? i have nothing more to say.
★☆☆☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-03 · 0 found this helpful
It's well structured and the content is good, but it is slightly misleading in terms of the amount of content. The Polish language only has 2 modules which are fairly bare bones and only goes to A2 level. If there was a bit more depth, say to B1 level or better than Babbel could easily be 5 stars.

Does Babbel - Learn Languages work offline?

Do not assume Babbel works fully offline. Reviewers report that offline vocabulary review, images, and audio can fail, and one reviewer says downloaded unit files still did not make the app completely usable offline. Another reviewer specifically objected to the vocabulary trainer requiring an internet connection.

If you need lessons while traveling without reliable internet, Babbel may not be dependable unless your specific course and device work offline in the way you need.

Several recent changes have noticeably worsened the experience for me. In particular, offline vocabulary review no longer works properly, images fail to load, and audio no longer plays. It doesn't offer to review the vocabulary offline, Are you going to fix this in the next update?
★★★☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-05 · 0 found this helpful
Es ist (wäre) gute Praxis bei Updates anzugeben, was geändert wurde. Unbegreiflich, warum für den Wortschatztrainer nach kurzer Zeit eine Internetverbindung verlangt wird!! Alles wäre offline vorhanden. Der Entwickler müsste versuchen, sich in den Nutzer zu versetzen. Letzterer sitzt nicht immer im geschützten Büro...

Does Babbel - Learn Languages have privacy or data collection concerns?

Some reviewers are uncomfortable with Babbel’s account, consent, and data flow before pricing is clear. Complaints mention being asked for data before learning the app is paid, being required to accept all privacy choices to open the app, and concerns about microphone or partner access.

These are user-review concerns rather than a full privacy audit. Still, if data sharing is a major concern for you, read Babbel’s privacy choices carefully before creating an account or granting permissions.

they make you give them data before they tell you it's not free. predator behaviour
★☆☆☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-02 · 1 found this helpful
Privacy is not an option. You MUST hit "accept all" to even open the app. They say you can change your mind later but by that point you have already consented to having your name, email etc sold to advertisers!
★★☆☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-20 · 1 found this helpful
they now want unknown partners to have access to your microphone and data. That is unacceptable

Can you learn Latin American Spanish or European Portuguese in Babbel - Learn Languages?

For Spanish, reviews suggest Babbel has Latin American Spanish content, and one positive reviewer specifically says they are learning that version. However, another reviewer felt the app forced them into Spain Spanish as well, so users who want only one regional variety should check the course setup carefully.

For Portuguese, reviews are clearer: Babbel includes Brazilian Portuguese, but a reviewer says European Portuguese is not offered. If European Portuguese is your target, the reviews indicate Babbel is likely the wrong choice.

Spanish learner here, I like it. the app provides detailed explanations of grammar and pronunciation. it explains how other parts of a country or region say things. I'm learning the Latin American version of Spanish. it's been pretty helpful so far I just wish it didn't stop at the B1 level curriculum. and because it already has the original Spain region. I would have to start all the way over on the Spain version to continue the course. I bought the lifetime subscription. definitely worth it
★★★★★Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-05 · 1 found this helpful

Are Babbel - Learn Languages lessons practical and well structured?

Many favorable reviews praise Babbel’s structure, grammar explanations, vocabulary review, and practical context. Reviewers who prefer it over more game-like apps often say Babbel feels more like real instruction.

But not everyone finds the lesson design practical. Critical reviewers say some phrases are not useful, lessons can jump around, explanations can be too thin, and automatic progression can make it hard to pause and study. Babbel seems best for learners who like guided lessons and explicit grammar, not for users who want full control over pace and lesson order.

I've started learning Brazilian-Portuguese, with 1 year of Babbel+ as it was the best value option. So far it's very good, an easy UX, and progress syncs perfectly across App and Browser. Course structure is sensible, and clearly well planned. The daily vocab review has different ways to aid memorisation, growing dynamically as you finish lessons. Babbel doesn’t overdo gamification or prompts. 'Daily streak' and 'streak challenges' are the only check-in mechanics. Emails and PNs aren't pushy.
★★★★★Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-21 · 1 found this helpful
I find the idiomatic translations confusing and unhelpful for learning non-idiomatic words and phrases. The absent relevant lessons before testing is always annoying. The app automatically moves on immediately after a question, which doesn't allow for learning, so I have to manually go backwards in the quiz to stare at the sentence to try to understand and memorize the words or concepts. Liking Babbel less and less with time. Doubt I'll renew the subscription.
★★★☆☆Babbel - Learn Languages · 2026-08-04 · 1 found this helpful
Training jumps around too much. I understand basic Spanish and the app jumps from basic formal and informal to expanded verbs in the first week. The word a day is advanced for beginners. There is very little explanation as to the different form of verbs in the first three weeks for beginners. In addition, no one I know says "Yo soy" as "jo Soy" yet Babbel teaches this more formal Spanish. 8.25.2026 developer responded if a lesson is too advanced I can change it. that's not the point of my review

Is Babbel - Learn Languages easy to navigate and use?

Reviews are mixed on usability. Some users describe the experience as easy and the interface as simple, especially when comparing app and browser progress syncing. Others say the layout is overwhelming, repetitive, difficult to navigate, or confusing when trying to find subscription controls.

If you are sensitive to interface design, Babbel may be worth testing before paying. The lessons themselves may be clear for some users, while account, subscription, and navigation areas appear to frustrate others.

The app is pretty good so far, little overwhelming with it's layout, but it works. My one MASSIVE issue. Subscriptions. This unfortunately has to stop. Not everyone has the ability to pay for subscription after subscription, and the fact it's the first thing you see if very soulless and corporate slop. UPDATE: No its worse. The fact you only have access to ONE lesson before being forced to pay is disgusting.
