Is Howbout: shared calendar free, or do you need Howbout+?

Howbout: shared calendar is listed as free to download, and at least one reviewer says the basic planning tools were enough for them. However, recent reviews strongly complain that features people previously used for free are now locked behind a premium subscription, especially customization, categories, colors, and in one review, widgets. If color-coded organization is a core need, the free version may feel much more limited than older reviews suggest.

It really is everything I was looking for. My friends and I have been hanging out for a long time, and this is really well made. Everything you need is free, but you can also pay for more customization.

Howbout is by far the best calendar app for sharing plans with friends, but it's quickly going downhill. Almost every feature, premium leaning or basic, is becoming pay-walled. Just recently they got rid of custom colors for events in favor of a 5 color locked category system. Want what you had before, for free, back? Pay money. It also has so many "quirky" features like memes that will automatically be placed on your events. It also crashes *very* often. I wish there was a better app.

Need to register, choose, plan, decide, invite, another person do all the steps and accept our invitation, then only we can get inside the app. Huhh!! And most of the features are for premium subscriptions.

What happened to color coding in Howbout: shared calendar?

Many recent reviewers say a color and category update changed how their calendars were organized. The common complaint is that custom color coding was reduced or moved behind a paid plan, existing event colors were reset or stripped, and users now have to work with preset categories unless they pay. This is the most intense recent complaint in the review sample.

I really really loved this app, but now so many of the features are being locked behind a pay wall! Its absolutely ridiculous that I need to pay to color code my events the way I want to. I like to have all my classes individually colored, not lumped all together under the general umbrella of school! I just want to be able to freely color code the way I want to.

the new update messed up my layout a lot and I'm genuinely upset about it. I had custom colors for every event and it was easy to figure out what event I had that day at a glance, and when I checked the app this morning, all I saw was a bunch of gray! all my colors gone in an instant, a year and a half of organization, gone in an instant, with absolutely no notice or rhyme or reason. I do not care about the categories, but having it be the only color an event can get is just plain stupid.

I've been using Howbout for 4 years. 4 YEARS. I've been the most loyal user. I've left 5 star reviews, done every survey, followed the Instagram page, and even got my friends and family to download it. Until last year. Howbout suddenly turned from an amazing calendar app that had all you needed, to a money-hungry platform that only wanted the users to buy the subscription. Steadily, all the features became exclusive. My last straw was when they took away the color customization. I'M HEARTBROKEN.

Do you have to invite someone before you can use Howbout: shared calendar?

Reviews indicate that onboarding can require inviting another person before some users feel they can properly try the app. This is a deal-breaker for reviewers who wanted to test it alone, connect with an existing user, or simply see the interface before asking friends or family to join.

Needs phone number, email, AND 1 friend invited before you can set anything up. Unsure how it runs, as I can not test it before inviting anyone. Uninstalled due to that.

would not let me continue through the starting log in proses without adding friends, I just wanted this app so I could pair with my mom's Google calendar (I cannot have Google calendar my self) I don't want her to have to have the app (She often has to delete apps just so he phone does not crash) just so I can know if my swim practice is canceled. I uninstalled this app because it is useless 😒.

Who thought it was a great Idea to gatekeep the app behind having to invite a new person, when you just want to share a calendar with an existing user?

Does Howbout: shared calendar require a phone number, and are there privacy concerns?

Reviewers say Howbout asks for a phone number during signup, and some stopped immediately because of that. One reviewer alleges their number was sold to scam callers; that allegation is not independently proven by the reviews, but it shows that phone-number collection and calendar privacy are real concerns for some prospective users.

Looks like something I'd foam at the mouth over, before I started looking at things through the lens of online privacy & data ownership. I tried to use it, but it asked for my phone number before I could do *anything*. Immediate uninstall. If 'bot protection' is needed on a calendar app, perhaps something needs to change. In the age of data breaches & brokers, my trust is hard-won. Calendars, by their nature, contain very sensitive information. I need to be able to trust the entire chain.

had a bad feeling and shouldve trusted my gut. they demanded a verified phone number to "avoid spam bots using a calender app" and then sold my number to scam callers. never again
★☆☆☆☆Howbout: shared calendar · 2026-07-21 · 0 found this helpful
Took a star off for the pointless 'home page' that concentrates on your friend's updates (I'm the only one that actively uses it) Then a point off when I found out that they are broadcasting my plans to people that aren't invited! Now another point off as they have removed all the colour coding requiring you to start again (and of course pay). I had an imminent trip that I had colour coded travel, accommodation, tours, etc. All gone. Thanks Howbout.

Why won't Howbout: shared calendar send a login code or accept my phone number?

Some reviewers could not register or log back in because the app did not send a code, rejected a valid phone number, or triggered a waiting period after repeated attempts. A few reviews specifically mention country or regional number issues. Based on these reviews, phone verification is a real failure point for some users.

the app doesn't give me the code when I put in my phone number idk if it's a bug or not it just doesn't give me a code so I can't register
★★☆☆☆Howbout: shared calendar · 2026-07-21 · 0 found this helpful
It won't accept my phone number even if I made sure it was the right one, it kept saying "Looks like there's a problem with that number...". I managed to make an account but it kept glitching so I uninstalled and reinstalled it. When I put my number in again to login it suddenly won't accept it and I need to wait another 6 hours, very frustrating.

Is Howbout: shared calendar good for families, couples, and friend groups?

When the app works for the intended use case, reviewers describe it as genuinely helpful for shared planning. Positive reviews mention families checking availability, couples staying coordinated, and friends making plans more easily. The main caveat is that these benefits can be overshadowed for users frustrated by onboarding, bugs, or the newer premium limits.

Great for keeping everything organised at home, sport, school, and work. The kids can book an event and instantly see whether we, as a family, already have plans for that day or time. Our family rule: If it's not on Howbout, you can't go. 😉

Is Howbout: shared calendar good for work schedules and shifts?

Reviews are mixed. One reviewer says it worked exactly as wanted for tracking people working and events, but others say it is hard to enter changing shift times or use the app as a work-schedule planner. Reviewers with complicated schedules also say the loss of flexible color coding made work and shift separation harder.

It works well for tracking everyone working and events exactly what we wanted
★★★★★Howbout: shared calendar · 2026-08-03 · 0 found this helpful
Impossible to put in shifts if you work at different times. Hard to change event times or days. Looking for something better
★★★☆☆Howbout: shared calendar · 2026-08-05 · 0 found this helpful
Amazing...until it wasn't. I'm a dispatcher w/ a really complicated/inconsistent schedule. The color coding made a huge difference in separating my day shifts from my night shift. It also made it super easy for my friends to understand my schedule. Im highly considering deleting the app as most of friends have or will. If I wanted a simple calendar I'd just use the free Google one. I liked how easy and whimsy this was. Every month less & less features are free & money is their only concern now

Does Howbout: shared calendar sync with Google Calendar, Outlook, or iCloud?

The app description says Howbout can connect Google Calendar, Outlook, and iCloud. The review sample does not give much detail on successful syncing; the reviews that do mention it are critical, calling calendar sync awkward or saying onboarding got in the way of a Google Calendar use case.

Calendar sync is always very awkward to navigate and use but the app isn't too bad. However I'm using an old account and it won't let me delete events that aren't on any of my calendars anymore that I want gone.

Is Howbout: shared calendar buggy or hard to use?

Some reviewers say Howbout is useful once you get used to it, but the review sample includes recurring complaints about confusing navigation, event times changing, login glitches, crashes, and difficulty changing event times or days. Expect a learning curve, and be aware that some reliability complaints are recent.

sort of confusing till you get a hang with it very useful

great app. it's a good source to use when planning. the only thing that annoys me is when I set a specific time, it'll shorten the time down by like an hour- so I have to go back and fix it again. but otherwise it's a great app I enjoy using.

amazing app. 4 stars because when I try to open sometimes it kicks me right out about 5 times before I can actually use it (samsung s21) annoying, but the actual app makes up for it

How is Howbout: shared calendar customer support?

The support-related reviews are mostly negative. Reviewers describe getting AI responses instead of human help, not receiving a human reply after asking, or getting no useful response after repeated contact. One reviewer says the team was helpful about the update, but the stronger pattern in the review sample is frustration with support.

about a month of using it, i suddenly cant have access anymore as "there was a problem" everytime my phone no. is entered which is required to log in or sign up in the app. I've tried deleting/reinstalling the app on different days with good network just to have access to it again but nothing happens. contacted support but no human supp responds only AI. could be better if not for this predicament and if users are allowed to use all features if it's only for themselves and not others to see.

I was one of the beta users cheering the creators on from the beginning and even left a 5 star review previously, however their last update has wiped out all of my colour coding data that I have built over the years and when I tried reaching out I only got a response from AI. When I requested for a team member I had no response altogether. It's such a shame to see a really great company skipping on customer service.

I liked this app, I used to organize my every day using it, color coding more than 300 events over the past year and a half. But one day the app asks if I want to keep my existing random color categories, to wich i say yes, and all my colors from each of my events dissapear. I contact them in 3 different places, 10 times, over 1 month, no response, other than an AI slop saying it has redirected my message to them. Never seen worst customer service in my life. Don't install, save your tears.
